How to Conduct Family Devotions

Christian devotions should consist of worship, instruction and prayer.

Worship is the first part of family devotions. There is a CD available for use with this devotional book. For ordering information go to www.pathlightspress.com/order.html. I highly recommend this CD, as the songwriter exceeded my expectations. The CD contains a scripture put to music for each of the character qualities. For example, every night in January you would play Song #1, Trust in the Lord. By the end of the year, your children should have the 12 scriptures committed to memory without even having to work at it. This song may be used as the worship portion of your devotion time. (If you choose not to order the CD, the 12 memory verses are listed below.)

The second part of family devotions is instruction. After the song, the family would read through the devotion for the day. About one quarter of this instruction material is taken directly from the Bible. These devotions are intended to be used in conjunction with the New International Version of the Bible. This book allows you to give your children a daily portion of God’s Word. Some of the devotions teach what God is like and some teach how the Bible can be applied to daily life.

The final part of family devotions is prayer. No ending prayer is included in this material. Prayer may be about something that relates to the devotion or anything that is on someone’s heart. Each member of the family should be encouraged to pray aloud. By following this routine you will be incorporating worship, instruction and prayer in your daily family devotions. If things go smoothly, devotions should take about 10 minutes. My desire is that this book will help you to pass on the faith that you embrace to the children that you love.
